A small dog has discovered the fossilised leg bone of a giant woolly mammoth. Daisy, a miniature wire-haired dachshund, found the ancient bone, weighing about 8lb, during its early morning walk on the beach at Dunwich, Suffolk.
The dog's owner, Dennis Smith, 69, dug it out of the sand and later showed it to a geologist who identified it as part of a leg from a mammoth that probably roamed the area up to two million years ago.

The 13in bone is believed to have been uncovered by heavy seas that battered the Suffolk coast and washed away sand that may have covered it for centuries.
Daisy made the discovery while Mr Smith and his wife, Barbara, were on a break at their caravan on the Cliff House Holiday Park in Dunwich.
Mr Smith said: "We were just walking along the beach when Daisy spotted this object sticking out of the sand half way between the high tide and low water mark.

"She just stood there looking at it. So I went over to see what it was. There was about six inches of it sticking in the sand so I pulled it out.

"It was obvious that it was some sort of bone and my first thought was that it might be from something like a mammoth. Daisy looked quite pleased with herself, even though it was far too heavy for her to pick up.
"She loves gnawing on bones and always has the leftover lamb leg bone from our Sunday roast."
Mr Smith has contacted the British Museum about the find.
